How to use candle sand: a candle in any container

Candle sand being poured into a ceramic bowl by warm evening light

Candle sand looks like fine, soft-coloured sand, but it is wax – tiny wax beads that you pour into a container, add a wick and light. There is no melting and no moulds. You simply choose the container, the colour and the scent, and you can top it up whenever you like.

What you need

  • A pouch of candle sand. Our pouches contain 300 g of wax beads and 4 cotton wicks.
  • A container that is stable, heat-resistant and non-flammable – for example a ceramic bowl, a glass jar or a terracotta pot. A wide, low container gives a calm flame and is easy to refill.
  • A heat-resistant surface to place it on.

Step by step

  1. Pour. Fill the container with the wax beads. Leave a little space below the rim.
  2. Add the wick. Press a wick into the centre of the beads so that it stands upright.
  3. Light. Light the wick. The wax beads around it melt and feed the flame.
  4. Top up. When the candle has cooled, lift out the hardened wax around the used wick, add a new wick and carry on with the remaining sand.

Ideas for your own design

Colours can be layered, so you can pour stripes of two or three shades into a glass jar. Unscented sand suits the dining table, because it does not compete with the smell of food. A scented one is lovely for a quiet evening on the sofa. One pouch is enough for up to 60 hours of total burn time.

Safety first

  • Only use candle sand in a stable, heat-resistant and non-flammable container, with the wick supplied.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep it away from children, pets, curtains and anything that can catch fire.
  • The container can get hot. Let it cool before you touch or move it.
  • Candle sand is not food or a toy – keep the pouch out of the reach of small children.

You will find all colours and scents in our candle sand collection.
